Wolff Audio, a leader in professional audio equipment design, today announced the release of its FREQ 500 Series Parametric EQ, exclusively represented by Sound Vision Works, a pro-audio marketing and distribution agency. The FREQ is a Sweepable, 4 Band, Proportional Q Parametric EQ, designed by audio innovator Paul Wolff, whose four decades of experience include EQ designs for API and Tonelux, among numerous other leading-edge audio tools.
Created to both complement Wolff Audio’s flagship analog Console ST and integrate into any audio workflow via a 500 series system, the FREQ aims to combine the qualities that classic EQs are known for with an updated level of accuracy and flexibility, delivering exceptional audio performance.
The FREQ’s myriad of features are designed for gentle, musical equalization with a level of precision when needed. The HIGH and LOW bands feature an additional WIDE mode that changes the Q to a 3-octave wide fixed filter. An alternative method to traditional shelving EQ, the FREQ’s Wide mode achieves smooth transition to high and low frequency sweetening, and adds capabilities for a more nuanced, gradual boost. The two MID bands’ 1/3 Octave Lock mode allows for precision notching of problem frequencies, surpassing the typically wider adjustments in Proportional Q mode. Featuring a custom designed Cinemag nickel and steel blended output transformer, the FREQ minimizes harmonic distortion, and imparts transparency without coloration.
“With the FREQ, we set out to create an EQ that’s purposefully built and intuitive to use so as not to get in the way of a mix, but add to its flow,” says Paul Wolff, FREQ designer and Wolff Audio Co-Founder. “The less time you waste when making a record, the better. With the turn of a knob, the FREQ’s responsiveness is incredibly apparent. It can be aggressive or it can be subtle; sharper and pointed, or wide and smooth. The FREQ imparts an understated characteristic that acts as a “glue,” similar to working on an analog console, while leaving the overall color of a mix up to the engineer’s creative preferences. It really is the ‘everything’ EQ.”
“Picture the most famous American EQ with stepped frequencies,” says Alex Oana, Sound Vision
Works’ Vice President of Marketing. “They sound amazing, but haven’t you ever wished you could
select any frequency you wanted? Boost or cut any amount? Wolff kept everything that's
great about that American EQ – the smooth filters, the transformer output – but made it fully
sweepable. And gave it a Pultec-like top and bottom. Yum, cake.”
The FREQ is now available through select retailers for $787 and will be featured at AES booth #619, as part of Sound Vision Works’ AES offerings.
