Porno for Pyros
Pyrotechnics: Porno for Pyros' Latest & Greatest (Rhino)
Limited edition multicolored vinyl
The timing is fascinating, but predictably zany. People are still gossiping about the fact that Perry Farrell attacked Jane's Addiction bandmate Dave Navarro on stage, before getting dragged off by drummer Stephen Perkins (who appeared to land a few midsection punches on Farrell in the process).
Now, Rhino is releasing the first Greatest Hits collection by Farrell's other band, Porno for Pyros. A band, incidentally, that also included Perkins in the lineup.
"The iconic collective—Perry Farrell [vocals] and Stephen Perkins [drums] of Jane’s Addiction alongside Peter DiStefano [guitar], Martyn Lenoble [bass], and additional bassist Mike Watt—have outfitted this body of work with signature staple anthems a la 'Pets' and 'Tahitian Moon'," the press release reads. "They expanded the set with three recent reunion recordings: 'Fingernail,' 'Little Me,' and 'Agua.' The latter suite of songs notably marked the group’s first music since 1997. Plus, Pyrotechnics also features a brand new Remix of the hit 'Pets' by Daniel Avery and a cover of the Lou Reed classic 'Satellite of Love'."
That cover of "Satellite of Love," by the way, is oddball and transformed enough, Reed would surely have approved. "Pets"--both the original and the remix--is still a great, topical listen. And the new songs do nothing to damage the legacy.
The vinyl looks stunning, and satirical sleeve art is typically witty. No matter what is going on behind the scenes, a Farrell project will always be intriguing.

British grunge-ish '90s band Bush has been out on the road again, earning a whole new generation of fans along the way. Meanwhile, their much-loved debut album has been given the reissue treatment.
"Hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed, sold-out summer headline tour, Bush is set to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album Sixteen Stone with a special 2-LP vinyl reissue," reads the press release. "This milestone release marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Craft Recordings, a label renowned for its dedication to preserving and amplifying iconic music. The multi-Platinum LP, a cornerstone of the ’90s post-grunge era, is set to arrive on November 22nd."
There are a number of colored variants and we received the red vinyl, which looks fantastic. The album includes some of Bush's best tunes, including "Everything Zen," "Machinehead" and "Glycerine." It's about time the album received the reissue treatment.
