Vinyl Minded with Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells and the Supremes

Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells

Together (Motown/Universal Music)

140 Gram, High Quality, Limited Edition Virgin Vinyl

The incredible spate of Motown re-releases continues with this bonafide beauty--the first and only album release by the duo of Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells.

Both of the Detroit stars had already had their hits by the time this albums dropped in '64, but the two voices work so beautifully together that it seems a bit of a shame that it was a one-time deal. Mind you, Wells left the label shortly after this release, so that might explain it.

Still, the songs are wonderful. The title track is perhaps the best--the stardust twinkling as they trade lines. The chemistry is tangible, and they seem to be having a blast together.

The Supremes

I Hear a Symphony (Motown/Universal Music)

140 Gram, Limited Edition, Green Vinyl

The Supremes' eighth studio album was an attempt to further endear the group to a traditional pop audience. That seems weird--what was it about the Supremes that kept a traditional pop audience from adoring them? Racism? Perhaps.

Anyway, this album sees them taking a successful stab at the Beatles' "Yesterday," and the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." The trio of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson were on top form, and the album proved that they could find magic everywhere.

The title track idea big, joyous pop gem, and "He's All I Got" is a heartfelt soul classic. The Supremes really could do no wrong.

The sleeve sees the three ladies deep in thought as a dove approaches. Meanwhile, the green vinyl is a sweet touch.
