Taft specializes in blues––not the kind you mope to, the kind you get up and dance to. His tuneful tenor rides a raft of terrific musicianship on material like “Skin & Bones” (his best), “Wishing Well” and the genre chestnut “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.” We feel that on the latter two songs, he makes the common mistake of trying to sing all gruff tough, and doesn’t quite have the pipes pull it off, while on “Skin & Bones” he sings with unaffected joy as his backup chorale adds bursts of southern rock power. But in the end, Taft is really about his ax––he’s a dazzler on guitar (check out his scorching solo on the otherwise homespun “Wishing Well”) and his band are equally fine in their support roles.
