Trombone Shorty, Big Boi, and Danielle Ponder played the Hollywood Bowl Wednesday night (8/4) for one unforgettable show. Ponder hit the stage at 8 P.M. and her set included Radiohead’s “Creep.” Radiohead last played the Hollywood Bowl in 2008. Ponder whose career was a legal defender, had a breakthrough as an artist in 2022 with a performance on Late Night With Seth Meyers and the release of her debut album Some of us Are Brave. The following year she was performing at Lollapalooza. Ponder’s 30 minute set also included the title track of her album, “Someone Like You,” “The Only Way Out.”
Following a quick changeover came out one half of Outkast, Big Boi. From 1993-2006. Outkast had released six albums, four which hit number two and one to hit number one on the Billboard 200 chart along with three number one singles. After 2007 the duo split up to reunite in 2014 for a few festival dates including Coachella. Big Boi performed two of those number ones “Ms. Jackson” and “The Way You Move.” His 40 minute set also included “Rosa Parks,” “Players Ball,” “The Whole World,” and “B.o.B.”
Closing the show was Trombone Shorty and Orleans Ave. Troy ‘Trombone Shorty’ Andrews career began at the age of four when guitar legend Bo Diddley invited him onstage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Fast forward to 2013 Shorty began to close out the festival taking the slot from the long time closers The Neville Brothers who disbanded to continue their solo projects and now Cyrille and Aaron are the surviving two brothers.
Shorty is both a Blues Music and Grammy Award winner. Shorty has made appearances on albums by Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Ringo Starr. Shorty’s set opened with The Meters “It Ain’t No Use” followed by his song “Do To Me,” Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy.” The set also included songs like “Something Beautiful,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and for the closer “Standing Here,” Shorty came out to the ramp between the pool circle and garden boxes. Shorty was also joined by Big Boi for two songs. A Shorty show is always a celebration and one big party just like in his hometown of New Orleans, LA.
