Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía is known for her avant-garde musical style and sampling, her latest tour “MOTOMAMI World Tour” is a hypnotic celebration of that creativity. In support of her third studio album, MOTOMAMI, she stopped by the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, CA, on Oct. 7th for a mesmerizing performance. The night began with white strobe lights flickering along to the song “Matsuri-Shake'' by the Japanese punk band Ni Hao. Through the back of the stage, Rosalía’s group of dancers, coined the “motopapis,” emerged wearing glowing motorcycle helmets. Blending in with the dancers and wearing the same helmet, Rosalía rose from the middle and began the night with MOTOMAMI’s opening reggaeton track “SAOKO.”
From start to finish, Rosalía’s set was perfectly choreographed. Cameras followed her every move as the video feed was displayed behind her giving the audience an intimate close-up look at the singer. Each performance featured a different set of dance choreography and ambitious avant-garde routines. For the track “MOTOMAMI,” the dancers formed a motorcycle that Rosalía confidently sat on top of. During “DIABLO,” she confidently sat down on a chair in the middle of the stage, took off her makeup with a mirror and cut a few strands of her hair with a pair of scissors. She proceeded to happily throw it to the crowd, “No make up, no nothing, when I feel the best,” she exclaimed. Rosalía is a natural onstage, she cheerfully talked to the crowd before each song. She also had fun by stepping down into the pit and letting those lucky in the front row sing during the fan-favorite “LA NOCHE DE ANOCHE.” Wearing an enormously long black skirt during “De Plata,” she gave a nod to her Spanish culture with a rousing flamenco performance. Her powerful range sent chills down my spine, she effortlessly hits every high note. Her voice has a lot of depth and character – always being the center of attention.
Rosalía received the biggest surprise of the night when rapper MIA and boyfriend Rauw Alejandro mixed in with the dancers during a medley of “Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi,” Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” and "DESPECHÁ." She reacted at the end telling us, “This is crazy, I swear to god I didn’t know that MIA was here. And I didn’t know Rauw was going to come to the stage either. I want you to know something, MIA has been one of my biggest inspirations. This woman is so incredible, her art is so incredible. I love her so much. I froze when I saw her.”
Rosalía's unique blend of music genres kept the night interesting. She’s able to go from fiery reggaetón to cheeky electronic and trap to dramatic flamenco flawlessly. Rosalia ended the night on a high note, riding on scooters with her dancers performing her playful track “CHICKEN TERIYAKI, then transitioning to the more somber ”SAKURA,” and ending with "CUUUUuuuuuute."
