There’s a very compelling sweetness to Cassia Dawn’s voice, recalling pop giant Taylor Swift or Detroit indie-pop group Lightning Love. But, like both of those, you only have to listen to the lyrics for a moment to realize that things aren’t always as they first appear.
The delicate voice is in contrast to the honest, strong and mildly cynical lyrics. Dawn has something to say, and dammit she’s gonna say it. On “Dropout,” she sings about the difficulties of balancing everything in your music while attempting to build a career. She’s right too.
