It’s interesting that Brooke Halpin describes himself as classic rock—perhaps that’s true if you use the broadest definition. Halpin is also an author who has penned books about the Beatles, and “Self-Indulgence” is certainly reminiscent of the Fab Four at their quirkiest.
You could imagine an idea like this on the White Album cutting room floor. But Halpin’s music also recalls the piano-driven shenanigans of the likes of Randy Newman. It doesn’t matter, ultimately. Halpin is clearly having a great time making these songs, and that enthusiasm is infectious.
