Machine Gun Kelly took over the Greek Theatre Friday night (10/15) with Jxdn and carolesdaughter. MGK has been in the news lately between his relationship with actress Megan Fox and a few crazy fan incidents at recent shows. MGK has definitely been making a name for himself over the past decade since signing with Bad Boy Records and releasing his debut album Lace Up in 2012. Lace Up made its debut at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and since then has achieved Gold status selling over 500,000 copies. After several acting roles MGK portrayed Tommy Lee in The Dirt (2019). Another milestone came just last when MGK was the only artist to have a rock album debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200 for 2020 which was Tickets to My Downfall which had tremendous success.
MGK is definitely known as a rapper but is also a big rocker too. His band of AJ Tylus (Guitar), Steve “Baze” Basil (Bass), Brandon “Slimxx” Allen (Keys), and JP “Rook” Cappelletty have been with him the last four years. MGK has also been working with Blink-182’s Travis Barker lately. MGK had quite a stage set up and appeared atop of a giant pill bottle with his guitar for the opening number “Kiss Kiss” which followed a video segment. For being someone who grew up on Blink-182 and Good Charlotte, MGK is definitely that kind of artist for today’s teens and young adults. Seeing the way the audience sang along with each song reminded me of seeing both of those groups over the years. It was easy to see how many die-hard fans were there, especially one that MGK rapped with in the audience. Just in the first 15 minutes of the show MGK was all over the stage after coming down from the giant pill bottle and was in the audience singing. Later MGK emulated Eddie Vedder doing crazy stunts like climbing up different parts of the venue.
I’ve seen many shows at the Greek but this may very well be the most high energy one and that the audience was totally into it from beginning to end. MGK played many of his hit singles including “my ex’s best friend,” “concert for aliens,” and “Jawbreaker.” MGK ended this epic show with “bloody valentine.”
