BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) has announced that Right Hand Music Group/RCA recording artist Khalid has signed with the performing rights organization to represent his songs worldwide. Khalid joins BMI’s growing roster of more than 800,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.
“In a very short time, Khalid has taken the world by storm with his wide-ranging talent. His music resonates deeply with fans of all ages, and we are honored that he chose BMI to support him in his continued growth as a songwriter and an artist,” said Mike Steinberg, EVP Creative & Licensing, BMI. "Khalid is a wonderful addition to the BMI family, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for him in 2018 and beyond.”
The 19-year-old singer/songwriter burst onto the music scene in 2016 with his debut single “Location,” which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Song chart, landing him on numerous artists-to-watch lists, including Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” Riding on the success of his first hit single, Khalid’s debut album American Teen premiered on Billboard’s Top 10 album chart before reaching the number four spot. The album was soon certified platinum with the help of the infectious anthem “Young Dumb & Broke,” co-written with APRA/BMI songwriter Joel Little, earning him the coveted title of “Best New Artist” at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and a spot on Forbes Magazine’s list of “30 Under 30” in music. In addition to his solo work, Khalid has earned incredible success in his chart-topping collaborations as a songwriter and performer on such hits as “1-800-837-8255” (with BMI songwriters Logic and Alessia Cara [SOCAN/BMI]), “Silence” (with BMI songwriter Marshmello), “Rollin’” (with BMI songwriter Future and Calvin Harris), and “Homemade Dynamite” (with BMI songwriters Post Malone and Sza together with Lorde).
As the newest member of the BMI family, Khalid joins an elite group of songwriters including Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, Julia Michaels and Halsey among many others.
