Zebulon in Silver Lake has been a great venue of late to see intimate shows by bands and artists that loosely fit under the punk rock umbrella. Only a week ago former Soft Boy Robyn Hitchcock was there, while D.C. hardcore band Scream, old school SoCal punks the Zeros, pioneer Jonathan Richman and Brits the Adverts have all played in recent months.
On Thursday, June 6 it was the turn of Jon Langford, erstwhile member of Brit country-punks the Mekons. With a solid band behind him, including a musician who goes by the name The Pieman, Langford blasted through a thrilling set of solo and Mekons tunes.
Langford, who now resides in Chicago, has long been a bit of a hidden gem. He's also been a member of the Three Johns, the Waco Brothers, and the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, consistently putting out quality material since the Mekons former in 1976.
At Zebulon, sporting a giant grin, Langford had a small but enthusiastic crowd enthralled. He played some brand new songs and we don't know what they're called but they were superb, while fellow Mekon Sally Timms joined him on stage for a couple of tunes before leaving to "go to bed."
