John Legend at the YouTube Theater

It sure was a legendary Christmas at the YouTube Theater December 3rd with John Legend. Since Legend’s debut release Get Lifted in 2004 he has won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Tony, and 12 Grammys (38 nominations) and was the first African-American artist to have won all four awards  (EGOT) and second youngest. Legend also has collaborated with Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, and Lauryn Hill. Between 2004 and 2008, Legend released an album every two years and between 2013 and 2018 released an album every two and three years.

In 2018, Legend released his first Christmas Album titled A Legendary Christmas which included guests like Stevie Wonder and Esperanza Spalding. Since 2018, Legend has released three more albums every two years, most recently My Favorite Dream released this year.  Legend performs shows solo piano and with a band. This tour Legend is with a band and three backing singers along with one of the biggest bassists & musical directors Adam Blackstone as the opener.

Legend is easily one the top performers over the last two decades and whether behind a mic or piano he’s a lot of fun to watch. Before Legend took the stage a book titled A John Legend Christmas was on the stage and shown on the video screen. Legend’s backup singers came out and began the show as if it was a story telling type of Christmas show and then jokingly said you didn’t think that’s what this was then the show kicked off and out came Legend himself.

Legend played Christmas songs off his Christmas album like “Silver Bells,” “The Christmas Song, (Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire),” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” My Favorite Things,” and his biggest hit “Ordinary People,” “and an encore of “All of Me,” and “This Christmas.” Not only was the show great musically but also visually with all the great graphics throughout the show and wardrobe.
