America’s favorite band the Beach Boys were honored by the Recording Academy three days after the Grammys at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, CA (2/8). Past artists/groups to be honored include The Beatles, The Bee Gees, Prince, and Stevie Wonder. Similar to the annual Musicares Person of the Year event, one artist or group is honored by a number of artists performing the honorees’ songs. The surviving Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and Mike Love were all in attendance. Although they did not perform you could see them sitting in an opera box watching the performances. Each guest only performed one song with the exception of duets. The lineup consisted of Little Big Town, Weezer, Michael McDonald, Beck, John Legend, Hanson, Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile, Take 6, Pentatonix, Andy Grammer, Foster the People, Lady A, St. Vincent, My Morning Jacket, Luke Spiller, Taylor Momsen, Mumford and Sons, LeAnn Rimes, and Jim James.
There were also a few speakers including John Stamos, who has performed with the Beach Boys since 1985, legendary producer Jimmy Jam, Drew Carey, and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. in addition to some of the performing artists who came out to announce other performers. The 21-song set included was full of beloved classics like “California Girls,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Fun Fun Fun,” “Good Vibrations,” and “God Only Knows.”
