In anticipation of his appearance at this year's International Pop Overthrow festival, pop-rock producer, bassist and guitarist Fernando Perdomo told us about his beloved console.
Fernando Perdomo: My Favorite piece of gear is my Soundcraft Signature MTK 22 Console. I am an old school record producer who prefers to play music than program it. I require more inputs than most in my studio and for years I topped off at 16 inputs with my Digidesign Digi 002 interface plus Adat Lightpipe 8 channel from Behringer or Presonus.
A few years ago I gave the Soundcraft MTK 22 a shot which is an old school mixing board with a built in 22 in D/A converter and it blew my mind. It has preamps borrowed from the legendary Ghost console and they sound incredible. This is a sleeper way to get 22 channels of input on Pro Tools and I do that effortlessly with a Mac Mini M1 with 16gb of Ram.
This setup is rock solid and very reliable. Most importantly the sound is fat and slightly colored like what you would want with a big console and I love the way my recordings sound. It even has a summing feature where I can mix a 24 track session analog with instant routing but I have not messed with that yet. I really hope Soundcraft continues to innovate with these consoles for years to come because I cannot think of running my studio any other way!
International Pop Overthrow takes place at the Redwood Bar in Los Angeles. Fernando Perdomo performs on Wednesday, August 7. For more info, visit internationalpopoverthrow.com.
