As Award Season kicks into high gear, A-list Oscar contenders Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Olivia Rodrigo, Mark Ronson, and Andrew Wyatt and more attended the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) holiday event in to help the prestigious organization honor outstanding composers and songwriters for their achievements this year.
The Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) presented its 2023 Ambassador Award to acclaimed composer Marcelo Zarvos (Cassandro, May December, Flamin’ Hot) and Grammy Award-winning songwriter and composer Wayne Kirkpatrick (“Change the World,” "Every Heartbeat," the Tony Award-nominated Something Rotten!, and the Mrs. Doubtfire musical). Past SCL Ambassador Award recipients include Dave Grusin, Burt Bacharach, David Shire, Johnny Mandel, Earl Hagen, James Newton Howard, Leiber and Stoller, Alan Silvestri, Randy Newman, Thomas Newman, and Hal David.
“The SCL Lifetime Achievement Award was created to recognize and acknowledge a select group of music creators without whose valuable contributions our profession would be less than it is, without whose creativity our community would be lacking and without whose gift our society would be deprived of the wonderful music and song expressed by their expertise. Their achievements will be used as the ultimate standard for future generations of media composers and songwriters,” said Ashley Irwin, SCL President.
Celebrating their Golden Globe nominations on Monday, global superstar Dua Lipa and her Barbie “Dance the Night” co-writers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, mingled with hundreds of SCL members, including top composers and notable music industry guests. Ronson and Wyatt also received another Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song – Motion Picture for co-writing “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie. The duo are strong contenders to win their second Oscar after previously winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song for co-writing (with Lady Gaga and Anthony Rossomando) the global smash hit “Shallow” from A Star is Born.
Other buzzy Best Original Song Oscar contenders attending the SCL soirée included Grammy and Oscar-winner Jon Batiste (songwriter of “It Never Went Away” from American Symphony), pop-sensationOlivia Rodrigo (co-writer with Dan Nigro of “Can’t Catch Me Now” from The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and Laura Karpman,composer of the score for Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction.
