BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) held its 29th Annual BMI Latin Awards honoring reggaetón pioneers Wisin & Yandel with the BMI President’s Award for their exceptional talent and artistry. During the private ceremony, BMI also saluted the top Latin songwriters, publishers and administrators of the past year’s most-performed Spanish-language songs in the United States. BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President of Creative, Latin Jesus Gonzalez hosted the evening at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
Wisin & Yandel began their career in the late '90s and released their first album Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio in 2000. That initial impact was followed by a succession of records that established their talents and propelled Latin urban music forward, influencing new artists for years to come. Throughout their decades-long career, the revered duo amassed global success and have won multiple Latin GRAMMYs, Billboard Latin Music Awards and Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, among other accolades. Wisin & Yandel join an esteemed list of previous President’s Award recipients including Carlos Vives, Gloria Trevi, Juanes, Luis Fonsi, Mario Quintero and Pitbull, among others.
After receiving their award, Wisin & Yandel captivated the audience with an electrifying performance of some of their greatest hits including “Ahora Es,” “Pam Pam” and “Rakata.”
The top songwriters, publishers and administrators of the previous year’s most-performed Latin songs were also honored throughout the ceremony. Puerto Rican hitmaker Tainy won Contemporary Latin Songwriter of the Year for his work on nine of the most-performed Latin songs of 2021 including “Caramelo,” “Dákiti,” “LA NOCHE DE ANOCHE,” “La Nota,” “La Santa,” “Safaera,” “telepatía,” “Un Dia (One Day)” and “Yo Perreo Sola.” Mexican songwriter Jesús Omar Tarazón took home the Regional Mexican Songwriter of the Year for penning four of the most-performed regional Mexican songs of the past year including “Altamente Probable,” “La Casita,” “Qué Maldición” and “Somos Los Que Somos.”
The mega hit “Dákiti” by Tainy, Egbert Rosa “Haze,” La Paciencia and Nydia Yera Laner won the coveted title of Contemporary Latin Song of the Year, and “Con Tus Besos” by Pedro Tovar nabbed the Regional Mexican Song of the Year. Universal Music Publishing Group secured the prestigious BMI Latin Publisher of the Year award, with 19 of the most-performed songs among their repertoire.
