ASCAP’s comments echo their six A.I. Principles – Human Creators First; Transparency; Consent; Compensation/Free Market; Credit and Global Consistency. ASCAP was the first PRO to establish A.I. principles back in 2023.
ASCAP is actively working to ensure the voices of music creators are heard as policymakers in Washington consider A.I. regulations, regularly meeting with members of Congress and engaging with the U.S. Copyright Office.
“A.I. can be a powerful tool for innovation, but only if technology companies respect the rights of creators and follow the law. The U.S. can win the A.I. race without abandoning the strong copyright laws that have fueled creativity and entrepreneurship across the country for decades. Allowing the unauthorized use of copyrighted works to train generative A.I. models for commercial purposes will threaten the livelihoods of millions of American music creators and undermine the foundation of the nation's thriving creative economy." – Elizabeth Matthews, ASCAP CEO
