An evening with Ann Wilson of Heart took place at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, CA over two nights (5/9 and 10) This was Wilson’s second night there. Heart consisted of the Wilson sisters Ann (Lead Vocals) and Nancy (Guitar/Vocals) and over the years the band’s lineup changed several times, but in 2013 the Wilson sisters along with the rest of the original lineup were inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. In December 2012 the Wilson sisters paid tribute to Led Zeppelin performing “Stairway to Heaven” at the Kennedy Center Honors along with Jason Bonham. To this day this is one of the most talked about performances to take place during the Kennedy Center Honors. Over the past decade Heart has toured with Def Leppard, Cheap Trick, and in 2019 when the sisters reunited after three years apart, Joan Jett was the opening act and the tour included a stop at the Hollywood Bowl. Heart is easily one of the most successful female-led rock groups releasing 15 studio albums all hitting the charts which included a number one (self-titled) along with six others in the top 10. In total eight of these albums were certified from gold to 5x platinum. Over the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2010’s 10 albums made the Billboard 200.
For 5+ decades Ann Wilson has been one of the greatest female voices in rock if not the greatest. For this tour, Wilson is not only performing Heart classics, but also songs off her new album Fierce Bliss released just two weeks ago, various covers, and Rock N’ Roll anthems.
Wilson opened with a Heart song “Even It Up,” followed by “Black Wing” from her new album. The set also included covers of John Lennon, Robin Trower, Jeff Buckley, and set one finished with The Who’s “Love, Reign O’er Me.”
Wilson took an intermission and returned with “Crazy on You,” which started with the band playing the intro before she came out onstage. Set two closed with another Heart classic “Barracuda.” The three song encore kicked off with Heart’s “Straight On,” and and closed with Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California,” and “Black Dog.” If there’s one thing fans can learn from this show, is whether it’s a slower song or more Rock sounding, Wilson can sing it perfectly. With the last time Heart performed L.A. being the Hollywood Bowl, it was extra special to see Wilson in a venue of this size and really hearing how great she sounds, but whether large or small Wilson’s voice projects to any venue capacity.
