She was Miss Mulatto when she was on The Rap Game in 2016, then she shortened that to Mulatto. Now, she's shortened it further to Latto. Give her a couple of years and her name will be To.
Joking aside, Latto's star has risen during those eight years, seeing the Atlanta rapper release three studio albums plus a handful of mixtapes and EP. The most recent album, this year's Sugar Honey Iced Tea, is her best so far.
Following impressive opening sets by Karrahbooo and, especially, R&B rising star Mariah the Scientist, Latto exploded onto the YouTube Theater stage amidst dry ice, rising platforms and deafening screams. For the next hour or so, we were treated to her greatest hits (so far)--'tude-heavy hip-hop anthems like the opening "Georgia Peach," "There She Go," and an excellent "Blick Sum."
If there was a problem, it was that it all seemed to be over too soon, despite the appearance of some cool guests. Flo Milli took over the stage for a hot minute while Teezo Touchdown joined Latto for "Prized Possession." New York was treated to a guest spot from Lil Kim -- no such luck here.
Near the end, "Chicken Grease" was a highlight of a set littered with them. Big Latto's star is getting bigger.
