The church building was originally the Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1915. In 1972, Leon Russell, a Tulsa native son and #1 touring artist in the US, bought the church and converted the sanctuary and other public spaces into a world-class recording studio and home of Shelter Records.
This is where Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers got their start. Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Kansas, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffett, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Marley, George Harrison, Dwight Twilley, the Gap Band, and JJ Cale have all recorded at The Church Studio in the 1970s.
After a 5-year renovation, we reopened in 2022. Kenny Loggins, Tommy Emmanuel, Bill Champlin, John Ford Coley, Taj Mahal, George Thorogood, The Nationa, Southall, Elle King, Wade Bowen, Dropkick Murphys, the Mountain Goats, Cory Henry, Rodney Carrington, and Disney's Jordan Fisher are just a few of the artists we've worked with.
