Berklee College of Music will be holding two summer programs in Los Angeles July 2016. These programs, held at Santa Monica High School for students aged 15 and older, provide developing musicians access to resources from Berklee, the contemporary music college. During these five-day programs, students learn from world-renowned faculty and work alongside other young and talented musicians from all over the world.
The school is also holding a kick-off event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 27, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. PDT at Santa Monica High School. Attendees are invited to an informative opportunity to:
• Learn about the two Berklee in L.A. programs: It's All in the Song (July 18 - 22) and the Performance Program (July 25 - 29)
• Mingle with Berklee faculty, alumni and music students from L.A.-area high schools
• Attend a special performance by jazz vocalist and bassist Katie Thiroux and singer/songwriter Samantha Schultz
• Register for a Berklee in L.A. program for the chance to receive a 50% discount; you must be present to be eligible

The first of the two programs, Berklee in Los Angeles: It’s All in the Song, takes place from Monday, July 18, to Friday, July 22. This program will guide the aspiring musician in a variety of aspects in songwriting, stage performance, production and the business of music. Through both individual and team efforts, students will work through the processes and techniques involved in writing, producing and marketing a song from conception to completion. Lectures and ensemble sessions will range from song form and lyric analysis to the various tools used to facilitate the creative process.

During performance workshops, under the guidance of Berklee Professors, vocalists and instrumentalists will develop their live performance skills, rehearsal techniques and stage presence. Songwriting production and recording techniques lectures, will advise students in the art of creating and producing a song. Students will also be familiarized with music software and the fundamental procedures of a recording studio. Courses will introduce students to the business tools necessary to compete in today’s ever-changing music industry during music business lectures. These lectures will provide students with strategies for getting a record deal, and information on business and legal issues pertaining to record companies, music licensing and copyright, contracts, music promotion and artist management.
Music News: Berklee and Boston Conservatory Merge
The Performance Program is the second Berklee in Los Angeles program, and occurs from Monday, July 25, to Friday, July 29. This program focuses on key questions for the contemporary musician: What are the stylistic considerations? Why should all instrumentalists—drummers, guitarists, bassists, pianists, wind players, string players—and vocalists strive to be well-rounded artists? These questions will be the guiding themes of the Performance workshop for all musicians—from classical to pop, and rock to jazz—interested in learning to be the best they can in the contemporary music styles. Classes will be in lecture and master class formats on topics such as instrumental technique, improvisation and harmony. Students will then apply these skills in ensembles and special lectures. All students will put their new skills to use by performing in a final concert and the end of the program.
