Vinyl Minded with Jhelisa and Charles Tolliver

Jhelisa

Galactica Rush (Dorado)

Soul and jazz artist Jhelisa Anderson has worked with the likes of Björk, Massive Attack and The Shamen, but she's also a respected solo artist in her own right. Galactica Rush was released three decades ago, and it's aged wonderfully well.

With Scottish electronica project The Shamen, Jhelisa was at the forefront of the UK rave scene while blending in psychedelia, funk, soul and hip-hop. That genre-blending can also be heard on this under-heard gem.

"The LP houses a reimagined version of the complete record, freshly remastered and cut at half speed at Abbey Road studios by the album’s original mastering producer Miles Showell," they say. "Limited to only 1000 pressings, the vinyl is available here via Dorado Records, while the album can be streamed now here."

The album arrived with a new 12” single featuring the "Sunship remixes of 'Friendly Pressure,' Jhelisa’s hit song from the album that was remixed by Ceri Evans in 1998 and reborn earlier this year."

That, too, is glorious. It's well beyond time that everyone gets hip to Jhelisa.

Charles Tolliver Music Inc.

Live at the Captain's Cabin (Reel to Reel)

It's great to know that Charles Tolliver is still with us, having first made himself known to the jazz-loving public back in the mid-'60s.

This double live album, given a limited edition release via Reel to Reel of just 500 copies, was recorded (as the name suggests) at the Captain's Cabin club in Alberta, Canada in June '73. And it really is a treat for jazz hounds.

According to the press release, the recording of the live set wasn’t planned. “We just went on and wailed away like we normally did,” Tolliver said. “By the time we got to Edmonton, I mean, we were a pretty tight band... I always used John Hicks. We started together before I even met Stanley [Cowell], so that was always my go-to pianist. And I loved how Clint Houston was playing at the time, and so I brought him on board. And a young Clifford Barbaro… had the kind of drive that was necessary for the group.”

It paid off.
