Houston rapper Jackson has found a sound and vocal style that is decidedly his. That’s not to say that it’s utterly unique and mind-blowingly ground-breaking. But Jackson’s voice, combined with the muted beats and chill vibe, is wonderfully effective. “You want the real? OK, I answer the call,” he decisively raps on “I Can’t Call.” The man knows what he wants and he’s determined to put the work in to get it. The melodic chorus on that same song presents a sweet dichotomy which, again, isn’t unlike things we’ve heard before but it just lands differently here. That x-factor is a good sign.
