Live Talks L.A. hosted a Q&A with Monty Python’s Eric Idle and comedian Alex Edelman at the Robert Frost Auditorium in Culver City, CA on January 28th. Idle has previously done Q&A’s with fellow Monty Python member John Cleese (2014) and actor/comedian Bob Saget (2019). This Q&A revolved around Idle’s book The Spamalot Diaries, which takes you behind the scenes on the creation of the Broadway musical Spamalot.
Idle stepped out onstage carrying a holy grail bag and inside was the book. Idle began with mentioning working with John Du Prez who he made the music with. The Q&A discussed the origins of the play which is mostly based on Monty Python’s Holy Grail film.
'Idle took the audience through adapting it from movie to musical and how they could have so many characters be in it. One key part was talking about how the musical would end as the movie was simply just a hand over the camera before a major fight scene could happen. Spamalot was in New York City most recently and ended in April last year, but will return to the stage for a tour beginning in September.
Spamalot brings the beloved Knights of the Round Table and many other characters from Holy Grail to the stage and recreates all the iconic scenes as well as adding a touch of a Vegas show to it. Idle also read an excerpt from the book and took audience questions at the end.
