Jordan Calhoun of melodic punk band Stoke Signals told us about his love for his Steve Slate Audio VSX Headphones.
Jordan Calhoun: So while my main job in Stoke Signals is bass, I also mixed our latest record. The one piece of gear I can’t live without are probably my Steve Slate Audio VSX Headphones. I’m sure some old heads will give me a lot of shit for this but I don’t care. These headphones are awesome and they were instrumental in mixing our record (old heads relax, I also used monitors :-P).
I’m a really big reference guy. While I always have quality headphones and speakers to listen to my music on, most people don’t so it’s important to me to check everything everywhere. Even just 4 years ago, it was a long process to reference a mix in all the different places. I would have to upload an MP3 to my phone. Go out to my car to play it there. Play it over my phone speakers. Connect the aux to whatever crappy speakers I have around my house. Like yeah, none of that was extremely tedious, but now I don’t have to leave the studio room to quickly check something. I still go out to my car and still use real devices as well, but just having the headphones and the different environments in the app to quickly check things has helped tremendously.
Once I got the hang of it I feel like it elevated my mixes to a new level as I was able to try environments I’d never have access to. Now, I am expecting my first child in the next few months so I know these headphones are going to become even more important to my work flow as I have had to move my recording studio outside of the house to make room for the baby nursery. So all those times I need to work on a mix at the house will be on these headphones when I can’t make it to the studio to check on my monitors. 10/10 product. Highly recommended for anyone who often needs to work on music on the fly, DIY bands like ours who are recording themselves without fancy studios, and anyone who can't afford to properly treat their rooms.
