Hit the Decks! It's Kito

Australian-born, L.A.-based female producer, DJ, and songwriter Kito says she's been DJing and producing for longer than she'd like to admit.

"Probably close to 15 years now," Kito says. "I’d say only in the last five or so years have I felt like I’ve leveled up as a producer and found some sort of stability in this very unpredictable line of work! It’s definitely been an adventure."

Describing her sound, Kito says, "I think at this point it’s just a palette I’ve formed based on what I’ve consumed while living in London and now L.A. I’ve always been drawn to dance music, and since moving to LA have gotten far more into producing other artists and collaborating so what I put out now is kind of the result of both those things. Some sort of intersection between club music and pop."

Her latest release is the BIMYOU EP.

"I’ve had the name 'BIMYOU' swirling around since 2016; I even had my friend Iain Dean design the cover art for my EP back then," Kito says. "I released my EP HAANI on my imprint BIMYOU as well. BIMYOU is a Japanese word that translates to 'subtle' and also implies that 'something is a little off.' I love music that fits in a pop landscape but that also has something 'a little off' about it."

As for gear: "I’m super in the box when it comes to production," Kito says. "I work on my laptop, I have PMC speakers and a midi keyboard that admittedly I don’t even use all the time as I learn to draw stuff in midi. For DJing I use CDJ’s or Technics if I’m mixing records (which is admittedly super rare these days). I organize my music in Rekordbox."

Looking ahead, Kito has plenty planned for the coming months.

"BIMYOU comes out September 20th and I have some US tour dates coming up that I’m excited for," she says. "I’ve been throwing my club Kito parties in L.A. and will definitely be doing another one soon. I also have some fun collabs coming out this year as well."
