The top story from Kandace Springs’ latest release is the outstanding cover of “What Was I Made For?,” Billie Eilish’s heartwrencher from the Barbie soundtrack. Springs’ rich voice, airy and emotive, serves the song well with only soft jazz piano chords to accompany. Run Your Race opens with the title track, slow and pensive, optimistic, but downtrodden. The album is filled with these tragically beautiful reflections (“So Far, So Near,” “Closer to Me,” “Broken Keys”), all inspired by the recent loss of Springs’ father.
