Take stylistic liberty, but not too much liberty
When covering a song, even if you go about it legally (getting a license to create a derivative work), be sure to stick within the idea of the song. Although adding your flavor is the key to a good cover, try to avoid the changing of melodies or verses—doing so will help you avoid a lawsuit against “proper use.”
