Study One Way, But Play In Another
When taking lessons on an instrument, art and academics are opposite sides of a coin and need to be regarded differently. Players sometimes make a mistake of trying to apply what they practice on a gig, but practice material usually isn’t usable on most gigs. Scales for example are good (not great) practice principles but are practically unusable in live playing circumstances. Remember to learn one way and play in another. And make sure to find a teacher that knows the difference. This way you will develop in two separate areas of music, not just one.
