File a copyright registration as soon as circulation begins
As a producer there are two copyrights that come into play in your business under the copyright law: the sound recording and the underlying musical composition or song. File a copyright registration form covering both copyrights as soon as a finished track begins to circulate (whether passing it around or posting it on a Web Site). This filing gives additional protection of your song, in case of a lawsuit. Currently, the filing fee is only $45. Forms are available at www.loc.gov.
