“[Conventional wisdom used to recommend 3 to 4 songs for a demo,] but, that’s not the case anymore. Just as with packaging, less is more. Two songs are plenty, because the purpose of a demo is to pique A&R’s interest. Give them too many songs, and all you’re doing is giving them more reasons to say NO. Submitting material to A&R is like a chess game where you want them to respond to you. Don’t tell them everything too soon. Give them a reason to contact you. If they’re really interested, they’ll call to ask questions.”
