Day 0 (Pre-Bonnarroo) 2008
So I just arrived to my hotel and luckily my luggage which included my guitar, band merch, clothes, etc accompanied me as well (safely and intact) to my room. There is no anticipation at the baggage claim like the thought of not being able to sell your CDs at the biggest show of your life because someone “misplaced” your most important suitcase which is now en route to Ithaca, NY or some random rural city in the US, but
low and behold, my bags came off the runway almost as quickly as I did after drinking way too much water for my own good.
After we rented our trusty transportation for the rest of the week, a slick Dodge Nitro (SUV), we ran across a girl at the airport looking for a ride to the festival. Now in most situations, I wouldn’t advise putting your life in danger to bring a stranger along for a journey to a destination in the middle of nowhere, but in the spirit of Bonnaroo which is all about putting good vibes into the universe, we took a chance on doing a good deed to start on the good foot.
This girl’s name was Mariko and as a token of her appreciation, she took my buddy Scott (NK Band tour manager in training) and myself out to a nearby Waffle House. This was my first Waffle House experience and from all the good and bad comments I have heard about this late night fast food cuisine, I was pleasantly surprised. Good on you, Waffle House. Job well done.
So onto our 1.5hr drive to the city of Manchester. While inquiring about Bonnaroo, Mariko asked us what our purpose was at the festival and after telling her we were performing there, her eyes lit up with excitement. I
told her the band name was the NIKHIL KORULA BAND and almost immediately she jumped out of her seat in complete astonishment. Apparently, she has heard of us because one of her friends recently wrote a review on our music (a pretty favorable one too) for Relix Magazine and Jambase.
Being a completely independent artist at one of the biggest festivals in the country is already cool enough, but to have some random girl from NY know who we are from a 2 min conversation, while we aren’t even in the state of TN for more than 30min, is pretty unbelievable. Small world, you know?
Anyways, the drive was awesome. We found some great satellite stations that were playing some fantastic music, but the whole time we are getting closer to the festival area, I can almost feel the energy start
to swell up inside of me. This feeling right now is something I know I will not soon forget. Tomorrow couldn’t come any sooner. It was already hard enough trying to sleep last night and on the plane as well, but
tonight, I’m literally bouncing off the walls. To top it all off, after we dropped off Mariko at her hotel, she ran
back to the car to tell me that while checking in, she heard a small group of people talking about how excited they are to check out our set on Sunday at 2:45pm at the Blue Room stage. Talk about synchronicity.
I couldn’t have planned this any better so far if I wrote the script myself. And the most exciting part about this story is knowing the best is yet to come….
Still pinching myself about this whole experience. I feel so honored to be in the company of these artists. The dream is happening and I’m thrilled to be awake and alive in this moment.
To anyone that is reading this, thanks for believing in my journey. You brought me to this point and I plan on proving to all 80,000+ people who will be attending Bonnaroo 2008 why we deserve to be here.
But again, our mission to leave an impression on the hearts of so many music fans in one place has only just begun.
Until tomorrow, shine on everybody!! Stay tuned…
